There were a number of trees down that were too large for our trail saws yesterday. Will probably need a chainsaw for at least one of them. They are located in two areas. All but one are on the last steep climb just after the creek crossing where loop 15 intersects the trail. The lone down tree (will definitely need a chainsaw for this one) is in the narrow ravine. If you take the trail in the normal direction, start out with a climb, then hop on the two track and descend which then turns back into single track. If instead of going up the single track to the right and continue on the "bailout" trail you will run into the downed tree.

Hi All,

Before a mountain bike militia is organized to storm the Back40 headquarters, I, as the Back40 race director, will take full responsibility and sincerely apologize for any trail skullduggery that occurred last weekend.  Though I wasn't actually doing the trail work, it was a Back40 trail worker who was.  He came clean and was fully repentant.  His description to me was that he was simply blunting some of the sharp, side-wall tearing rocks...not doing wholesale rock feature removal.  He thought it would only improve the flow and safety of the trail.  Regardless, if we can't do it with a rake, pruner and trimmer, it shouldn't be done and he has been reminded of that.

I too have been riding trail 15 lately and have noticed some subtle changes, but not on the order of rock features being removed.  I've noticed (and sincerely appreciated) rocks and pine needles raked off of the trail.  I assumed that these changes were from the sweat of the BHMBA members who are preparing the same area for their race in two weeks.

I'll verify that the Back40 trail crew has been encouraged to help the BHMBA with their monumental task, but, to be honest, with our own race 2.5 months away, we've done very little to that trail yet.  So be careful not to blame (or credit) the Back40 trail workers for every change that you've noticed in the past couple of months based on an isolated lapse of trail maintenance judgment by one of our crew.

Thanks for listening and enjoy your rides,

Phil Busching
Race Director - Black Hills Back40

This could easily be the fate of the MOU trails if we are not careful.

From the description given by my friend, they were on the loop section, after the rolling hills before you descend near the double track road. I would describe the specific area as a small, flat rock garden where there is a small ledge and a narrow V.

However, I suspect that there are many sections that have been damaged by this crew. A number of ledges and rocks have been destroyed/removed along the trail over the last few weeks. I just didn't know who was doing it. Similar damage has been done to loop 15.

These people need go ride the bike path and stay out of the woods.

Over the past few weeks I have noticed that a number of rocky features have been recently destroyed on loop 15/lolipop.

A friend of mine was riding the lolipop yesterday and found 3 people with sledge hammers on the trail destroying some of the features there. They said that they had been given permission by the black hills back 40 people to go in and beat down all of the rocky features on the trail. Evidently they have also been doing this on loop 15. This is not ok with me or anyone else that I ride with. They have literally destroyed features on these trails that we can never get back.

My friend didn't get names but he described them as a younger man, an older man, and a woman.

If anyone from the blackhillsback40 reads these boards, stop immediately. You are destroying the trails.

I was wondering who had been tearing up the trails so much. Every marginally difficult feature now has a pile of rock in front of it.

Trail Conditions / Shanks Quarry to Rim Trail and back
« on: January 15, 2012, 07:31:20 PM »
Rode on 1-15-12. Shanks to redrocks was 95% great. Descent into the valley and up through four points was very snowy and icy but rideable for the most part. The rim trail was 100% awesome. Looked at bone collector but seemed too snow packed to ride.

Victoria lollipop is riding great. Some areas with appreciable snow make it all the more fun to drift your rear tire. Switched out my rear Nevegal for a Slant Six. So much fun to be able to drift at will.

Rode most of the stuff on the south side last night. Trails were 60% completely clear/ 40% snow covered. Everything was easy to ride, no need for ice spikes yet (rode it with small blocks/slat sixes). I was amazed at how clear sun climb was.

Trail Conditions / Breezy Point
« on: August 05, 2011, 10:40:54 AM »
A couple of trees were down that were too large for trail saws to cut last night. Also, crazy number of mosquitoes were out and made a trip back to the car to get some bug spray. Great trail system overall, this was my first time riding it. Tons of fun little technical features and some larger ones. Had trouble figuring out the path from Breezy to Wrinkle rock but after that it was good.

Rode this on Friday after the signs were installed/fields were cleared. Very nice. Thanks Gary!

Also, Kelly has posted head cam footage of three of the trails at pink bike (look under the 2009/2010 terry peak folders):

These videos should give you a feel for what the trials are like.
